Adoption fees range from $50 to $125. Pontiac Silverdome will host motorcycle festivalMotorcycle fans from around the region are expected to converge on the Pontiac Silverdome next week for a four-day festival. the Midwest Motorcycle Fest runs from Thursday through Aug. 1 at the 127-acre site and includes races, custom and sport bike shows, skill demonstrations and music. the 80,300-seat Silverdome was home of the Detroit Lions until 2002 and was sold last year for $583,000 to Triple Properties Inc. of Toronto.

Sid Chavers has a lot of hardware to his name, from a Navy Marine Corps medal to a plaque in the national Hot Rod Hall of Fame. Chavers can now add a significant piece of paper to his award haul.The Sunnyvale native was named Veteran of the Year in California's 22nd Assembly District for his time as a Navy jet mechanic and crew chief of a navy rescue team from 1971 to ' 74. He's also the owner of the Sid Chavers Company in Santa Clara, a custom upholstery shop for classic hot rods and race cars."What a great honor," Chavers said. "I got a certificate, not a medal or anything, but that thing is getting framed and hung on my wall. It makes me very proud."Chavers was chosen by Assemblyman Paul Fong (D-Cupertino), who awarded the honor at the third annual Veterans Recognition Luncheon in Sacramento last month. Chavers and Fong were classmates at Sunnyvale High School, and Chavers said he was thrilled his old acquaintance remembered him after all these years."Veterans often live in our communities unrecognized for their bravery in preserving the freedom of all Americans," Fong said. "I am honored to be able to thank Petty Officer Chavers personally for all that he has done for us."Chavers, a petty officer second class while in the Navy, served on the highly specialized rescue team that pulled citizens and soldiers alike out of harm's way. although he served in the Navy for three years, he never had a soldier rescue—only citizen rescues, and mostly in Yosemite or King's Canyon.Chavers received the Navy Marine Corps medal for a rescue in Yosemite Valley, when a Navy officer on leave fell into the Tuolomne River while hiking and was stranded on a rock for 36 hours. a helicopter hovered in a canyon over the river for minutes while Chavers was lowered to the rock on a wire, attached the hiker to the wire and pulled him to safety."We actually had to switch places, because the wire was only strong enough for one of us to go up at a time," Chavers said. "The rotor blades on the chopper were probably only 50 feet from the canyon walls. It was pretty hairy."Chavers was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1974, and he went to work for his father and uncle at their motorcycle seat manufacturing company. there Chavers learned to sew upholstery, and in 1976 he upholstered his first classic hot rod.That was the start of the Sid Chavers Company, now recognized as one of the world's premier classic-car upholsterers. Chavers has done work on cars for Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Reggie Jackson and numerous other stars with classic hot rods from the 1950s and earlier."There's only a handful of guys out there who do this kind of work," Chavers said. "I had a normal upholstery shop once, but I like doing these hot rods so much more. It's a lot of fun getting to do this stuff."

Ken Steenrod has done it again. his Peoria motorcycle shop will be displaying its latest work of art, a customized one-of-a-kind motorcycle called a bagger, on Saturday at the Peoria Zoo. Steenrod has teamed up with the Peoria Zoo to unveil the Safari Bike, a 2001 Electra Glide Standard. "Our client is a safari hunter, and he wanted something to reflect his interest," Steenrod said. The client, Jim Mercer of Wyoming, could not be reached for comment. The bagger bike, which is essentially a motorcycle with at least two saddlebags, started off black. it now has a montage of Africa and many of the animals who call it home. "He wanted it to be themed after the big Five - a Cape buffalo, lion, rhino, leopard and elephant," Steenrod said. "We told him we can make it work. " so Steenrod and his crew sat down and generated a computer graphic to create the art that the client wanted and then built it over three months. "We got the African animals, put in an African safari landscape and tied it all together with true fire," Steenrod said. "We added some nice motor work, a set of new Ness wheels, upgraded sound and a custom seat, and he's got a best of show bike for sure." The bike will be featured in American Bagger Magazine, which will bring it national attention. that is not new to Steenrod. in 2009, Steenrod's company was chosen by Arlen Ness, one of the biggest names in the custom motorcycle industry, to create "Retro Ness," where he retrofitted a Harley-Davidson Road Glide with specially designed, never-before-used parts. there also was the "Monster Energy" bike, Miller Lite bike, and Bob and Tom bike for the nationally syndicated radio show. "There's going to be a big show in Reno, Nev., where this bike will be shown," he said. "We also got a call from the St. Louis Zoo, so this bike might be displayed there."   Bagger Bike What: The unveiling of the "Safari" bike with the backdrop of the Peoria Zoo. when: 1 p.m. Saturday at the Peoria Zoo's Africa! exhibit. “Awesome, baby!” “Rip it!” “Sick!” Such are the typically lyrical responses to the custom-built bikes featured on TLC’s “American Chopper”. Thanks to the relationship between openly antagonistic Paul Teutul, Sr. and his easy-going son, Paul Jr. - better known as “Paulie” – as well as their abundant talent with acetylene torches, a reality show about a family-run motorcycle business evolved into something that transcended personal combat and transportation. In between profanity-laced tirades and tool-tossing tantrums, the Teutuls magically turned motorcycle after motorcycle into works of art. Six years of epic familial agony ended last season with Paul firing Paulie, the company’s chief designer and fabricator. They haven’t communicated since. Whether Paulie’s exit is a bad thing for the family business, Orange County Choppers (OCC), remains to be seen. But it’s turning out to be a very good thing for camping and outdoor gear company, Coleman…and for guys who like cool BBQ grills. Coleman is the first client of Paulie’s fledgling company, Paul Jr. Design, hiring him to do for its RoadTrip Grill what he did for OCC’s choppers. “In 110 years, we’ve never used an outside celebrity designer,” says Coleman Marketing Manager, Delaina Lee. “We picked him for his eye for design. Because he knows how to bend metal and twist steel, make it look cool, trick it out. Guys who like our gear appreciate the beauty of motorcycles.” Hiring him was a gut decision, she says. “When we thought about Paulie it was like, ‘What a cool idea. Let’s see what happens.’” And so they gave Paulie a grill. No, he’s not the new George Forman, merely putting his name on someone else’s creation. He’s the guy who made the grill look and work better. “There’s quite a few similarities to motorcycles and grills,” Teutul says. “They both run on gas, run hot, there’s a lot of metal. In this case, they both have two wheels. They’re more similar than you’d think.” Paulie re-engineered the RoadTrip applying the same grinding, welding and shaping skills he uses on bikes. He did a “Pimp my Ride” on a grab-and-go-grill and made it cool. He changed the color from red to an ultra-shiny custom-black, used lots of chrome, added built-in diamond-plate side tables and tool hooks, a speedometer-inspired thermometer and ten rivets for the grill’s tenth anniversary. “The functionality was there,” he says. it already had electronic ignition and an open-flame drip-through grill. “I added a dash-type pop to it, jacked it up to 22,000 BTUs. I applied what I did innovating motorcycles to a different product,” he says. Coleman loves its tricked-out grill and so, they say, do their customers. Teutul knew he had an eye for design when he came up with the distinctive OCC logo, and he realized that he was good at innovating when he got his hands on the RoadTrip. “I think it’s my gift, my God-given talent, to innovate products. We’re all good at something. this is my thing.” He loves the fact that his designs are now affordable. If you can’t buy a motorcycle, you can buy a grill designed by a guy who designs motorcycles. Every aspect of every design, he says, is his own. “I have to have my hands literally on it and in it. It’s just the way I work.” And he acknowledges that working with his dad enabled him to open his own design firm. “My father exposed me to the situation of building motorcycles and I found out I was good. But he’s a yeller. He’s a yeller and sometimes a very unhappy person.” So much so that dad filed a lawsuit against Paulie that Paulie doesn’t talk about. Right now he’s keeps his head down, ignores his father, attracts new clients and gets the job done. which is pretty much what he did on the show. Paulie insists that, despite its profound dysfunction, “American Chopper” is family-friendly fare that’s not just for bikers. “At public appearances 98-year-old women would wait in line for autographs. We’re on TLC, like, the number one women’s network, how ‘American Chopper’ is on TLC, I don’t know,” he says of the network that boasts “Kate plus Eight,” “19 and Counting” and all manner of childbirth shows. “It’s not a show about bikes,” he says. “It’s a show about a family who happens to build bikes.” Viewers like them, he thinks, because they’re transparent to a fault. Of his chair-throwing, trash can-hurling, door-slamming exit Paulie shrugs, “It was, most likely, on my part, a freak out caused by a long period of time being pushed. Everything that ever happened on that show happened before it was on television. we didn’t need any coaxing. I’m laid back. my father’s not. That’s the dynamic.” Yes, present tense is appropriate because Teutul père et fils lives on. “American Chopper: Senior vs. Junior," debuts August 12th. Separate crews are shooting at Paulie’s new design and bike shop as well as at OCC. “We don’t communicate. The film crews don’t communicate. We’re filming two different shows and TLC is going to integrate them. how, I don’t know.” The RoadTrip Grill is Paulie’s first non-OCC project and he’s currently working on other Coleman projects and ones for other clients. But bikes remain his first love, and probably always will, for reasons even he can’t explain. as the saying goes, only a biker knows why a dog sticks his head out of a car window.

Fri, Jul 2, 2010    to del.icio.us BY ALEX DOTY They've crafted their mowers for sports teams and television shows — and now the Indiana-based company that makes the Dixie Chopper is looking to make a custom-built lawnmower for the U.S. Coast Guard just in time for the Grand Haven Coast Guard Festival. Click to enlarge "Every year, we try to have something that's ... new," said Mike Smith, executive director of the Grand Haven Coast Guard Festival. Smith said the lawnmower is a great opportunity to highlight a local business that cares about the community. in this case, it's PS&T Small Engine Repair in Grand Haven. The local company — which sells Dixie Chopper lawnmowers — went to Magic Circle Corp. of Coatesville, Ind., with the idea of doing something unique for the festival. "They are going to have it done in Coast Guard colors and it's going to be one-of-a-kind, with a definite Coast Guard flare to it," said Madonna Kramer, director of marketing and development for the Grand Haven Coast Guard Festival. Kramer said the finished product will be on display during the festival's Grand Parade, at Escanaba Park and during the Salute to Heroes event on the waterfront. "We're an American-made product and we are proud to be associated with our hometown heroes," said Eric Bernsee, a public relations representative for the Magic Circle Corp. Bernsee said that a team of builders is now awaiting parts and supplies so they can begin working on assembling the mower. He said the mower will also have a unique riding seat. "Once they get the right parts in, it won't take that long to assemble," Bernsee said. While the company can produce multiple mowers in one day on its assembly line, according to Bernsee, there will be a special Dixie Choppers team will carefully assemble the Coast Guard mower. Bernsee said the company has "done a few wild and crazy things" in its past. this includes a Chinook helicopter-lawnmower equipped with a jet engine that Tim Allen rode on the television show "Home Improvement," a propane-powered mower with a barbecue grill, and one for the National Football League's Indianapolis Colts. Smith said festival officials are working on the details of what will happen with the lawnmower after the festival, since there are specific rules in place on what the Coast Guard can accept as gifts. From Harley Rocker To Harley Chopper By An Official Harley …

Most of you will not build a bike from the ground up, just customize their stock Harley (although some projects need you to strip down the bike to bare frame…). And me I love to be aware of a nice custom Harley built by an official Harley-Davidson dealer. Less and less frequent in the US. Maybe foreign dealers have or feel that they have more freedom in experimenting beyond the factory limitations.

So, I feature a simple but very nice looking 2009 FCW Rocker whose powertrain (TC96B, 1585 cc) and frame geometry were kept untouched. Yes, there are limits to what a Harley Dealer will accept to do… Still, by the addition of a series of well chosen bot-on custom parts with a bobber or chopper feel and a simple flat black paint job, you can go from today to yesterday for a reasonable budget without worrying about your title and your insurance agent turning you down.

The main parts  for this make over are: BSL Exhaust (ceramic coated), TB Aircleaner, TB Apehanger Handlebar, Motogadget Mini Speedometer, “Bobber Style” Tank with smaller Fuel Pump Unit, Custom Fender front and rear, H-D Hanau Spring Seat, Hydraulic Clutch Conversion, Arlen Ness Grips and Footpegs, Side Mount License Plate Holder.
