Intel Custom-chopper finally retires in a glass case

Back in 2007, to celebrate its 30th anniversary of being in the embedded business, Intel built a custom chopper that was just loaded with all the latest tech, and one hell of an engine. While it was so loaded with gadgets and high-end equipment, it wasn’t very rider friendly and never saw life on the road. the chopper travelled from road show to road show, usually serving as a photo prop, but it was never ridden around or taken for a ride on the track. The July rally in Sturgis, Kent., is on again, but it won’t be known as the diminutive version of the famed South Dakota rally anymore. Organizers canceled the rally two weeks ago because of a trademark lawsuit that Sturgis Motorcycle Rally inc. took over from the Sturgis (S.D.) Chamber of Commerce. the case is pending in federal court. But many in the area didn’t want to lose the event or the revenue. So the Union County Fair Board, Custom Biker Wear and Cycle Works agreed to present a new rally July 14 to 17 under the name Kentucky Bikerfest. Fair board president Doug Omer told the Evansville (Ind.)

CMG Online – Canadian Motorcycle Guide – Retro posters on demand

Written by CMG Staff on Wednesday, 30 March 2011 There's nothing like a good motorcycle poster to spruce up a room. However, not everybody wants a large-scale photo of a scantily-clad girl with a chopper or sport bike on their living room wall, and that's what most posters seem to consist of. of course, you can get around that by buying a poster for an older machine like a Brough Superior (no gratuitous bikini photo-ops in those olden days!), but what about the real classics, like that Yamaha XS650 or Kawasaki KLR650 you've got sitting in the garage? where are you going to find a poster for a real head-turning machine like that??? while not everyone may share your affection for your machine's innate style, that doesn't mean you can't get a classy poster featuring your favourite ride, old or new. Just get in touch with the good folks at Retroscope. The Ottawa-based company specializes in what they call vintage imaging; that's a fancy way of saying they restore old photos, and more importantly, they produce retro-styled posters to order. That's right — you can get a custom vintage-themed print of you and your 1981 Suzuki GS400, all done in the pleasing style of yesteryear. who could resist a deal like that? Users' Comments (0)

Three Pittsfield supermarkets prepare for food fight
April 1, 2011 by Chopper Fan

Saturday March 19, 2011 PITTSFIELD -- a three-way food fight is shaping up among fierce competitors as Guido's Fresh Marketplace on South Street completes its major expansion, Price Chopper prepares for an early summer opening of its $8 million, 52,000-square foot superstore in the renovated and enlarged Center at Lenox, and the Super stop & Shop on Dan Fox Drive works on strategy to maintain its customer base. All three are located within a half-mile radius from each other along the Route 7 & 20 corridor on either side of the Pittsfield-Lenox line. "This is the nation's most competitive retail industry," said Mona Golub, vice president of public relations and consumer services for her family's Price Chopper chain. Employment at the old store, now 93, will surge to about 175 at the new one. With profit margins ranging from 0 to 2 percent, markets must battle to retain or expand their share of customers in a dog-eat-dog competition. Christopher Masiero, co-owner with his brother Matthew of Guido's here and in great Barrington, acknowledged that Berkshire County is oversaturated with chain supermarkets and a handful of independents. During a tour of his Pittsfield store, Masiero pointed to an airy new look with natural light, redesigned energy-efficient interior lighting, wider aisles, increased selection, new rest rooms and the opening in June of an eat-in cafe with sandwiches, pastries, gelato in summer and soup in winter, a coffee bar with espresso and cappuccino and a juice bar -- all self-service. The marketplace has grown from 15,000 to 20,000 square feet during the multimillion-dollar expansion. Employment for all the businesses housed there is expected to hold at about 90. There's expedited checkout, a higher-profile Bella Flora run by Chris and Annie Whalen, a more spacious section for health and beauty aids, as well as produce, dairy and frozen-food departments doubled in size. The biggest change, Masiero said, is a larger Berger's Specialty Foods deli and bakery, with a new self-service section and a hot-food case with entrees to go. a wine department, part of Mazzeo's Meat and Seafood, has been expanded. With final work nearly completed, a gala celebration is being planned for the third weekend in May. Guido's has come a long way from its humble origins 33 years ago at the site housing the Berkshire Flower Co. Guido's opened at its current location in 1984; the great Barrington store on South Main Street followed in 1995. Masiero's competitive advantage, as he sees it, is "a natural foods slant to buying and selling. People who really want to eat healthy, enjoy great ingredients and love to cook -- that's my customer." In terms of pricing and quality, Masiero insisted he'll go head-to-head with any major chain. "They have three or four specials they give away every week," he said, "but so do I." "Going back to 1978, we were selling produce up the road for six years. That was the start of every major supermarket chain raising the bar in Berkshire County. were we the impetus behind it? Possibly. I just know it happened then, and ever since it's grown precipitously to a higher level. they do a great job; I think we do, as well." Masiero asserted that he's seeking a 5-percent increase in his share of Berkshire County shoppers -- current rankings are an industry secret. "It's survival of the fittest," he contended. For the size of the population here, he added, "you still get people opening up major grocery chains trying to knock each other out. It's not that we need another one, it's ‘Can I get so much of their market share that the other guy can't survive in business.' I'm always up against that, especially with the population density, even though it does rise in the summer. but you have the other eight months of the year when it's a dog-eat-dog world, and the population is decreasing." At Price Chopper, Golub detailed enhancements at the new Lenox superstore, which will be open 24 hours a day. Those include an expanded seafood department with heat-and-eat and ready-to-cook products, greater emphasis on nutritional value for all products on a 1-100 scoring basis, and increased availability of organic fruits and vegetables. Price Chopper's new store will have a commitment to locally grown and manufactured products, based on close ties with area farmers, Golub said. "We see ourselves as the largest farmers market," she said. The new store will also have hot food offerings with cafe seating, including fresh pizza, roasted chicken, steamed vegetables and potatoes, a full soup and salad bar, along with a Central Market coffee shop and Central Market Florist (a tip of the hat to the company's original name). The new Price Chopper will also have expanded deli, bakery, custom-cut meat and wine departments. it will have a full line of health and beauty care products, but no pharmacy. And soon, more gas stations will be honoring the store's Fuel Advantage program, which cuts 10 cents off per gallon for every 50 dollars spent. Meanwhile, Super stop & Shop is biding its time, not disclosing its strategy for the store it opened on Dan Fox Drive in October 1994 and expanded in 2005. "We are well aware of the competitive activity," said Suzi Robinson, manager of public relations. "We're sticking to our game plan" with emphasis on its Gas Rewards program -- 10 cents off per gallon for every $100 spent -- and an on-site filling station.
