Thought you might be interested to know about this HD Koslow, an obscure and very rare OHV conversion of a Harley Flathead. Koslow? Owner Barry Brown gave me the 411 on his bike. When in 1931 Ignaz Schwinn, the owner of Excelsior/Henderson Motorcycle Company in Chicago, decided to shut down the business, one of his engineers named Andrew Koslow, an active hill climber and owner of the closest franchise to the actual factory, had a plan. at the time OHV Excelsior big Bertha hill climbers Gene Rhyne  (Crocker future engineer) and the legendary Joe Petrali utilized a twin port hemi head configuration. So, Andrew Koslow  made up a new set of castings using the Excelsior top end as inspiration,  and converted  the big Flathead VL’s to use in the then popular midget car racing. Andrew Koslow ran his motorcycle shop through the 1930′s up until the early 1950′s but never built a complete bike!Barry Brown’s HD Koslow was built 10 years ago as a 50′s style Bobber around one of these conversions using all period pieces. he started out with a Koslow OHV conversion of a Flathead squeezed into a VL frame. the engine heads and cylinders were unique, cast by Modern Casting, (same outfit HD used) but used knucklehead rocker arms. maybe more than what you want to know, follows the list of parts and modifications making this machine so unique (only 3 conversions are known to exist). The Koslow has an heavily beefed up left side drive case and unlike the 2 other Koslows is running twin carburetors (twin Linkerts on individual manifolds). Stainless push rod covers and oil lines. Twin port exhausts (4 pipes, with the 2 left styled after the Harley 45 European road racer pictured in Wright and Hatfield. Engine displaces 84″ engine and runs a UL full flow oil setup.Oil tank is an air dryer from a Mack truck! Cast alloy gas tank is heavily modified with period in-dash tachometer. Hand made stainless steel battery box and primary with 2 row chain and tensioner. John Cameron inspired Ford hub cap stainless vented derby. 1936 and up style 4 speed transmission. Modified forward frame mount cop shifter. Flanders bars and risers. Strutted VL forks with double Brough Superior style dampers. Twin front brakes activated by Vincent type balance beam. Star hubs laced to 19″ VL rims. Headlight is a spun brass spot taken off the roof of Barry’s 1936 Ford fire emergency rat rod. Crocker “limp dick” taillight”. Crocker magnesium tool box with custom made tribute plaque to Harry Buck who traded him the Koslow engine for a Militaire one!. Barry did cast the bronze floorboard with the Koslow logo in them. Dan Pugens WR pillion (a work of art made with old HD saddle bag leather)Recently, Barry Brown went to Chicago to show and start the bike for the Andrew Koslow’s grandchildren who still run a shop, but not about motorcycles, now just Chinese made Schwinn bicycles! the HD Koslow bike deserves a better video than the one below…

Motorcycle USA Chooses SLI Systems’ Learning Search for Publishers to Increase Page Views and Improve the Reader Experience

SOURCE: SLI Systems   Dec 20, 2010 13:26 ET SAN JOSE, CA--(Marketwire - December 20, 2010) - Site stickiness and reader loyalty are primary concerns for online publishing sites. to improve these areas and make its digital content site more attractive to advertisers, Motorcycle USA (motorcycle-usa.com), a preeminent e-magazine devoted to the world of motorcycles, chose Learning Search for Publishers from SLI Systems (sli-systems.com). With the on-demand Learning Search site search solution, Motorcycle USA visitors can now quickly find the content they seek, and are also guided to other useful material, which results in more repeat visits and more products purchased on its sister e-retail site, Motorcycle Superstore (motorcycle-superstore.com). Published by Motorcycle Superstore and based in Medford, Oregon, Motorcycle USA is a collection of motorcycle reviews, news and race coverage for motorcycle enthusiasts, updated on a daily basis. The digital publication implemented Learning Search for Publishers shortly after the site search solution was implemented on the Motorcycle Superstore e-commerce site. "Our previous site search solution lacked the type of sophisticated segmenting of search results needed for our audience," said Jason Miller, CTO and vice president of technology for Motorcycle USA and Motorcycle Superstore. "Readers have different needs when they search -- some are looking for buyer's guides, some want videos, and some want to read news articles or blog posts. Learning Search helps us showcase these content types separately within search results, which draws more clicks to content our readers might otherwise not know we have." Learning Search for Publishers provides customizable, SaaS-based site search for digital media sites, helping publishers drive more traffic to their sites, improve the findability of their content, and increase site stickiness. Higher traffic numbers and longer time spent on sites by readers can help publishers attract advertisers, sell subscription content, and draw attention to related products. "Online publishers that rely on advertising revenue need to attract visitors to more content and encourage them to return to the site. with higher page views per visit, publishers can bring in more advertisers and even raise ad rates," said Ed Hoffman, vice president of global business and corporate development for SLI Systems. "Learning Search for Publishers gives publishers tools to promote content and make it more accessible to readers, improving the visitor experience and generating more profitable click-throughs." Learning Search also enables publishers to control the order of site search results and create custom landing pages for high-traffic queries. For example, Motorcycle USA readers often search for "quarter-mile times," a popular performance benchmark for motorcycles. The company created a specific category page for the term, including quarter-mile times for popular motorcycles -- and the page is now highly ranked on Google. "By using SLI search to listen to the way our customers talk, we've been able to build pages they want to visit, and that they can easily link to when they discuss related content within blogs, forums, or message boards -- all of which helps with search engine optimization," Miller said. With improved search refinements and more relevant search results, Motorcycle USA readers are now more likely to return to the site and to spend more time browsing content -- which also benefits the site's advertisers. Site analytics show that visitors who use search remain on the site 15% to 20% longer than visitors who don't use site search. "We have a lot of content on the site and articles on the homepage only remain there for a few days, so it's easy for people to miss something," Miller said. "Search has become one of the most valuable tools on our site to help readers find content of any kind. The ROI of Learning Search has been tremendous, as it continues to drive results for both our online publication and retail businesses." About SLI Systems SLI Systems is the leading developer of Software-as-a-Service learning-based search and navigation solutions for corporate Internet sites, content publishers, e-commerce destinations and consumer Internet portals that Searches, Learns and Improves the user experience. The Motor Cycle Industry Association’s monthly motorcycle statistics show that during November there have been signs of recovery (PRWeb UK) December 17, 2010 The Motor Cycle Industry Association’s monthly motorcycle statistics show that during November there have been signs of recovery. although overall the market is down, all engine sizes saw an increase in sales this month compared to sales in November 2009. The influence of the industry’s get on campaign, that is focused on bringing new riders into the world of motorcycling is reflected in the sales figures as the entry level sector (51 -125cc engines) saw the biggest improvement with a 11.1% increase compared to November last year. In that category the Honda CBF 125M was the highest registering model within each style. Scooters, again the ideal machine for entry level riders, have experienced 13.1% growth with Kymco and Peugot the highest registering style. Although we have entered the colder months of the year it is a positive sign that a number of the sectors have expanded. The areas of biggest growth was in the Trail/ Enduro market (24.9%) , followed by Supersport ( 19.7%) and Custom bikes (14.4%) . Steve Kenward MCI’s CEO commented, “ We are seeing the benefits of the industry’s get on campaign as the smaller engine bikes are growing steadily. it has been a difficult year for the industry battling through a recession and more recently the unusually cold weather. “ The industry is working hard to grow the market and savvy buyers who shop around can benefit from some of the good finance deals that are currently on the market in the run up to Christmas” For more information about the industry's get on campaign, which is helping people get into the world of motorcycling by providing a free one hour ride with a local trainer, go to the website geton.co.uk . Tremont Woods is an appealing place to live. It's an established neighborhood, flanked by woods on three sides and located on a quiet stretch of Crescent Road west of Moe Road that was little more than farmland a half-century ago. the subdivision is a scant few miles from Interstate 87's Exit 8 on-ramp, and is within minutes of drug and convenience stores, shopping and restaurants. Built in the late 1970s and early 1980s, Tremont Woods has a mix of housing styles, from stately Tutors and classic Colonials to angular contemporary units and single-story ranches. Some of the neighborhood's larger homes can be found on a cul-de-sac at the end of Bittersweet Lane, the development's main thoroughfare. Houses here are set behind thickets of trees and vegetation. Trees are in abundance in Tremont Woods. Tall oak and maple trees line the neighborhood's three streets and offer a backyard buffer of shade and privacy for homes on the west side of Durham Way, which also balls into a cul-de-sac. Leaves tumbled across the street, ending up on several of the development's winter-ready lawns during a recent weekday drive through the neighborhood. Houses in Tremont Woods are roomy enough for growing families; homes here range from 2,000 to more than 3,000 square feet. Some houses, like a property for sale at 18 Bittersweet Lane, have five bedrooms and a three-car garage. Orange County Choppers unveil The Freedom Bike

Celebrity bike builder: Paul Teutul Sr. of Orange County Choppers paid a visit Wednesday to Fort Ritchie, Md., to unveil the Freedom Bike, a chopper his shop built specifically for the National Fallen Heroes Memorial. the Freedom Bike cost $150,000.Then came the star of the show, Paul Teutul Sr., riding a custom-made chopper he created for a planned National Fallen Heroes Memorial near Frederick, Md.Teutul has been at the forefront of “Orange County Choppers” for more than 10 years. Teutul began building custom motorcycles on the side as a hobby, and in 1999, he founded the world-famous Orange County Choppers.Teutul and his work can be viewed on the reality series “American Chopper.”The National Fallen Heroes Memorial is being planned as a tribute to deceased men and women from five branches of the military.Memorial project founder Debbie Higgins said she met Teutul at a veterans event in Florida. Higgins said she and Teutul worked out a deal to have a custom chopper built that the memorial could use as a fundraiser.Higgins said Teutul built the bike at his shop in Newburgh, N.Y. Higgins took the stage after Teutul arrived, describing how he “bent over backwards” to aid the memorial project.Teutul said it was an honor to make the bike. The bike was then moved closer to the crowd so Teutul could describe its features. Teutul walked around the bike, pointing out features like two ammo boxes on either side. Henson said he came to the event because of Teutul and the planned memorial. Vietnam War veteran Gerald Flood of Waynesboro, Pa., talked to Higgins after the bike was presented and told her about Vietnam veterans not getting the support that other veterans have received.Although the walls will not bear the names of Vietnam War veterans, the museum will spotlight that war, Higgins said.Higgins said work to develop the memorial comes after her son, James Higgins Jr., was shot and killed in Iraq four days before coming home in 2006.A motorcycle designer, a mother of a fallen Marine and about 500 supporters flocked to Fort Ritchie on Wednesday afternoon to help raise awareness and money for the future National Fallen Heroes Memorial in Frederick.Deborah Higgins, mother of Lance Cpl. James Higgins, has been working since 2007 to create a national memorial for those who died serving their country post-Vietnam. Higgins has secured land for the memorial, which will be on U.S. 15 just north of Frederick. "If everybody in America donated a dollar, we could build this memorial now," she said before the motorcycle unveiling. the memorial will sit on 18 acres, with 35 more acres for military burials adjacent to Resthaven Memorial Gardens, which donated five acres to the memorial.

Thieves steal bike from teenager with disability

By Jessica Heffner, Staff Writer Updated 10:57 AM Thursday, December 23, 2010 MIDDLETOWN — it may have just been a bike theft, but to the Brewer family, the thieves who recently took the cycle from their garage may prove to be the Grinches who stole Christmas. The bike was the only item 16-year-old Cody Brewer got for Christmas last year. the custom-made red tricycle with heavy black mag wheels cost Cody’s single mom, Karla Brewer, almost $600, but was worth every penny. Cody has cerebral palsy and cannot walk long distances. but on his bike he could go anywhere.“It’s the only way he could get around,” she said. “Everybody knows him as the kid on the three-wheel bike.”Karla Brewer had the mag wheels put on the bike because Cody leans heavily to one side due to his disability. she had the brakes specially fashioned so he only had to use his left hand to stop because he cannot use his right hand. the bike gave Cody the freedom to get around without a wheelchair.Last Saturday, Karla Brewer woke up to find the lock broken off her garage and the doors hanging wide open. gone was Cody’s special red bike, along with his brother’s maroon Schwinn chopper-style bicycle and a pack of cigarettes from her van.Tracks in the snow led through the Brewers’ backyard onto the road to a church on Tytus Avenue. from there the trail ran cold. the family has filed a police report and talked to neighbors about the theft, but so far there have been no leads.Karla Brewer hasn’t been able to tell Cody about the theft. Because he is prone to seizures, she is afraid of what the news may do to his health — and his heart.“I was very upset because the only thing he can do is ride that bike,” she said while fighting back tears. “That is the one special thing he had for Christmas. he loves that bike.”Even though the bike is expensive, Cody’s grandmother, Korky Lawson, said what it meant to the teen is what makes it so valuable.“I wouldn’t even call the thieves Americans. That is just so un-American,” Lawson said. “how can you do that to a crippled kid?“he is so sweet and talks to everyone. he doesn’t know what a stranger is,” she added.Karla Brewer said she is hoping the bike is returned intact “and not in pieces.”Anyone with information is asked to call Middletown police at (513) 425-7700.Contact this reporter at (513) 705-2843 or .

CMG Online – Canadian Motorcycle Guide – Study shows training = speed, safety

December 26, 2010 by

Written by CMG Staff on Wednesday, 01 December 2010 Experienced motorcycle riders sometimes act like newbies, but advanced training can make them not only safer, but faster. those are the facts revealed by simulator studies in the U.K. recently. The University of Nottingham’s Centre for Motorcycle Ergonomics & Rider Human Factors set up a study using a Triumph Daytona 675 mounted on a custom stand, and displayed images onto a large screen in front of the test subjects. Simulation software was used to project the rider into real-world riding situations and gauge the reactions. three different types of riders were used to test not only reaction to dangers, but perception of hazards. Novices, experienced, and trained riders were put through the tests. in some cases, experienced riders behaved no better than newbies, the study showed. but riders with advanced training rode smarter, safer, and faster. The study “demonstrated clear differences between the rider groups and potential benefits to advanced training above and beyond rider experience and basic training. whilst experience seems to help develop rider skills to an extent, advanced training appears to develop deeper levels of awareness, perception and responsibility. It also appears to make riders better urban riders and quicker, smoother and safer riders in rural settings," said Dr. Alex Stedman, a member of the Human Factors Research Group. Another researcher, Dr. David Crundall from the School of Psychology, said the study showed that “advanced riders were quicker to identify hazards” and were more responsible in sharing the road environments. but the Institute for Advanced Motorists’s director of policy and research, Neil Greig, said the advanced riders obtained another benefit. They “adopted the safest road position to deal with hazards while still managing to achieve the quickest time through bends.” You can see more about about this story at the science daily website.
