Biketoberfest 2010: It never gets boring

Published: 2:00 AM - 10/25/10 last updated: 9:50 AM - 10/25/10 They came, they rode, they partied, and they were more than 150,000 strong. The rumbles in Daytona Beach, Fla., could be heard miles away. this was Biketoberfest 2010, held Oct. 14-17.It's amazing how this event can change from year to year. Crowds could be down one year. it could be nothing but sport bikes another year. you just never know. But what I do know is that I am one person who finds it very hard to stay away from it.This year's event was great, in a word. The Boardwalk Custom Bike Show showcased some of the most creative pieces of bike art and construction that you will ever see. The icing on the cake for me was Willie's Tropical Tattoo Chopper Time Old Skool Chopper Show held right at the tattoo shop in Ormond Beach. my husband, Jay, and I got there early, found a seat at the picnic table and had our breakfast as we watched the homebuilts roll in one after the other. There's no doubt that it was hot — 90 degrees hot! But it didn't stop visitors from finding their way to Boot Hill Saloon, Iron Horse Saloon, Rossmeyer's Harley-Davidson, the Cabbage Patch and, last but never least, Main Street in Daytona Beach. this is where you can shop, watch thousands of bikes cruise up and down the street, or just stroll along and take a look at the ones that are parked on the street. There's always something. If you are a fan of pro streets, trikes, choppers and customs, head to Daytona Speedway. there you can find the likes of Dave Perewitz, Eddie Trotta and Bourget. a little hint for ya: if you have a car, try to park in the infield or near the airport entrance. It's a much shorter walk. Bikes have the priority parking. anyway, now that I have that off my chest, the speedway displays and vendors are something you don't want to miss. you may also find new items that are coming out for bikes. My good friends Jack and Cheryl Gady of Middletown also attended Biketoberfest. in fact, it was their first time. to sum it all up, they plan on going next year and may even think about attending Bike Week. I'm tellin' ya, you get addicted. I had my doubts about spending the money to go, but as soon as I got there and saw the sand, palm trees, ocean and bikes, that quickly changed.Bike Week 2011 will be held March 4-13 in Daytona Beach. Infamous Choppers drug ring trial starts

BEAVER — the last of the major defendants charged in the operation of a drug ring stretching from Arizona to western Pennsylvania is on trial in Beaver County Court. Testimony began Tuesday morning against Kirk Charles O’Neill, 40, of 1503 Grandview Way, Aleppo Township, who has been charged with helping operate the ring that was centered at the Infamous Choppers custom motorcycle shop in Ohio Township. About a dozen other men, including alleged ringleader John Duzicky, 38, of 37 Timber Lane, Aleppo, have already reached plea agreements, many in exchange for testifying against O’Neill. In opening statements Monday morning, Deputy Attorney General Tom Mutchsler argued that although Duzicky was the owner of Infamous Choppers, O’Neill was listed as president of the company and was the one who paid rent on the building on Camp Horne Road. Advertisement Defense attorney Stephen Colafella argued that his client never handled any drugs and was never a subject of surveillance by the attorney general’s office drug task force. “Kirk O’Neill is an extra in this case,” he said. O’Neill is charged with operation of a corrupt organization, delivery of controlled substances, possession of marijuana and cocaine with intent to deliver, and conspiracy to possess with the intent to deliver for activities between July 1, 2006, and June 1, 2009. Members of the drug ring had been accused of smuggling drugs into Tucson, Ariz., from Mexico and then shipping it to western Pennsylvania in hidden compartments in truck trailers.

MOSES LAKE — Seizures prevent Brian Wilkins from ridingmotorcycles, so he decided to make his bicycle into one. The yellow bike shaped like a Harley-Davidson motorcycle isdecorated with flags, spinners, tassels and decals. Wilkins, dressed in a motorcycle helmet and a jacket reading“Lone Wolf” points out the various additions he has made during thepast few years.“About 80 to 90 percent of my house is decorated withHarley-Davidson stuff,” he said. “I like biker stuff ... when Istarted working at stores like Walmart, I started collecting bikerstuff.”He started becoming interested in Harley-Davidson items when heordered magazines featuring items for motorcycle owners. when hestarted putting together the bike, he ordered items and purchasedsome from the leather store, he said. along with this bike, he alsois working on a West Coast Chopper.“I started putting little bits together,” he said. “I justfinished getting some things mounted on the (other bike.)”He rides the bikes to work, he said, saying he rides the yellowbike when the weather starts getting cold, and rides his West CoastChopper when it warms up.“Lots of the employees at Safeway like the flags,” he said. The two flags on the back, one featuring the Harley-Davidsonlogo, and the other reading, ‘Biker born, biker bred. when I die,I’ll be biker dead,” he had custom made. EDMOND — in 2002, Reggie Whitten, an Edmond resident and Oklahoma City attorney, visited Sister Rosemary Nyirumbe during a trip to Africa. He is the force behind the Whitten-Newman Foundation, a private, family foundation in Oklahoma City. the foundation was created in 2007, as a way to honor the life, legacy and spirit of Brandon Whitten, whose life was tragically cut short by a motorcycle accident in 2002 with a purpose to change lives and provide hope. Young people in parts of Africa have little or no money, few opportunities and little prospects for a brighter future. indeed, many did not even have clean water or food to eat. the Whitten-Newman Foundation chose to focus on northern Uganda. Due to the activities of the Lord’s Resistance Army, the United Nations has labeled Gulu, Uganda, the worst place in the world for children. These children needed exactly what the foundation wanted to provide — education and hope. Sister Rosemary Nyirumbe is director of the St. Monica’s Girls’ Tailoring Centre in Gulu. “If you ever have a bad day or think you have a reason to give up, all you have to do is visit these children in Uganda,” Whitten said. “I can almost guarantee you’ll find a reason to stop feeling sorry for yourself. Many of the young women under Sister Rosemary’s care have been kidnapped, mutilated, raped or tortured. Thanks to Sister Rosemary, though, they now have hope, an opportunity for a bright future and many reasons to smile again.” Pros for Africa, sponsored by the Whitten-Newman Foundation, brings together “pros” such as National Football League stars Adrian Peterson and Roy Williams with other professionals to provide humanitarian aid. Whitten said Pros for Africa is made up of doctors, lawyers, nurses, NFL players, Democrats and Republicans who have united to help others. Pros for Africa is an international nonprofit relief organization headquartered in Oklahoma City. Founded in 2009, it focuses on African children in need, and it provides food, water, clothing, medicine and other necessities to disadvantaged children of war, poverty and natural disaster. in March 2010, 48 Oklahomans went to Uganda. Among them was Edmond resident Mike Hinkle, a member of the Oklahoma Bar. while there they completed one new well with help from Water4Life, an Edmond nonprofit organization that prepared and sent equipment for drilling water wells.

While Clutch and Chrome may have speculated what kind of motorcycle President Obama would ride if he were bitten by the biker bug, what bike he would sign to help military families is going up for auction this week. A custom creation from Hardcore Choppers dubbed the P-40 Warhawk has been signed by President Barack Obama and will be featured in a Barrett-Jackson auction event taking place in Las Vegas today through Saturday. All the proceeds from the sale of the motorcycle are going to support military families. The motorcycle will feature a who’s who of the American governmental Executive Branch with signatures from Vice President Joe Biden and national security adviser James Jones as well as President Obama. Reportedly it was the son of national security adviser James Jones who donated the bike to the auction. The custom motorcycle features an Army P40 Warhawk "theme" paint job and designed to recall 1950s European race cars. Highlights of this special piece of machinery include aircraft quality wiring, a dove leather seat, handmade two-into-one stainless steel exhaust, HC Speedster bars featuring an internal clutch and throttle. Rounding off the package are Avon tires covering the 18" rear and 21" front wheels. All proceeds will benefit the Fisher House Foundation, a charity that builds houses and donates them to the government to provide free housing to military families who have a member being treated at a military or Veterans Affairs hospital. The AP says there are 49 Fisher Houses on the grounds of military and VA medical centers.
